Roman (500 BCE-476 CE)
Roman art is most often characterized by its incredible similarity to Greek art due to large amounts of cultural sharing between the two civilizations. Rome also borrowed artistic techniques from Etruscans and native Italic, prompting historians to identify it as eclecticism, or the practice of combining many different historical styles into pieces of art. The main forms of art included sculpture and figure painting, but architecture, mosaics, and the making of glass and coins were also popular during this period. A specific type of painting known as frescoes also developed this time, in which the artist would paint onto wet plaster so that the painting would be part of the wall. Much of Roman art is focused on the Roman mythology and gods (very similar to the Greek gods) or famous political leaders. Others such as the portrait above are privatly commisioned paintings, later found in archelogical ruins such as that of the eruption of Mt. St. Helen's in Pompeii.
I created this mosaic first by using the Rectangular Marquee tool to make the sky and the sea. I applied a Pattern overlay to the water, and added waves by using Liquify and I added sun to the sky by using the Lens Flare Filter. I also applied a Gradient Overlay to the sky. Then, I used the Pen tool to cut figures out from pictures I found on the internet, filling them in with black. Next, I found a picture of wings online and made one look as if it was glowing by using an Outer Glow. Then, to make the other pair appear to be on fire, I applied a Gradient Overlay and an Outer Glow. The last main step was to apply the Mosaic Tiles Filter to the entire image.

I created this piece in a very similar manner to the one above. Again, I used the Rectangular Marquee tool to create the sun and the sea. I added a Pattern overlay to the water, but this time I applied the Wave Filter. Again, I applied the Lens Flare to the sky to create the sun. Using the Rectangular Marquee tool, the Liquify tool, and Pattern Overlay with a rock texture, I created the different rocks. I applied a Bevel and Emboss to some of them to make them stand out. I made the sides and the post of the ship also using the Rectangular Marquee tool and the Transfrom tool. I achieved the wood-like effect using Fibers Filter. I used the Pen tool to cut out the figures (the Mermaids and Odysseus) from their images, which I found on the internet, and the I used the Transform tool to size and position them. Lastly, I again applied a Mosaic tiles Filter.
