Byzantine and Islamic (476 CE- 1453 CE)
Islamic Art includes most notably beautiful architecture, used to build Mosques and other holy buildings, elaborate tile and carpet designs, painting, ceramics, and even Arabic calligraphy, which can be seen in mosques, on textiles and paintings made by Muslim artists, is even considered an art form due to its ornate and visually attractive form and its significance within the Islamic culture. The rugs, known as "Oriental Rugs" or "Persian Rugs", which my class is going to focus more deeply on, became famous as they were spread throughout the world by Muslim merchants in the Post-classical era. The carpers are covered in ornate and detailed designs, which are symmetrical across the entire rug. The use of layers as one goes inward is popular, and the rich colors, especially red, are also seen commonly in this art form.
I created this piece by using the Rectangular Marquee tool to create the layers of color, that decrease in area as one travels inward on the rug. I applied a stroke to each of these layers, which can be seen in the darkest and lightest brown colors on the rug. Then, using some elaborate designs, vines, and other nautral elements along with some interesting geometric shapes, I created brushes, which I applied in the different layers, and symmetrically in the middle. Lastly, to achieve the carpet look, I applied a Grain filter.
