Middle Ages (500 CE- 1500 CE)
Gothic Architecture was the style of architecture that was very popular during the Middle Ages, or medieval period in Europe. Most of the great monumental architecture built during this time period was built in the Gothic style, including cathedrals, abbeys, castles, palaces, large town centers, guild halls, and universities. A famous example of a Gothic style building is Notre Dame in France. The main exterior features of this type of architecture, which I attempted to imitate, are the pointed arches (which make the shape of the doorway), columns stretching along the front of the building, and a pointed triangular shape at the top of the building. Finally, much Gothic architecture is famous for their beautiful and elaborate stained glass structures, which I also added to my rendition.
In imitating this architecture style, I first used the Rectangular marquee tool to create the structure of the building. I gave it a 3-dimmensional effect by using the transform tool to tilt the sides, and filled in certain selections with varying lighter and darker colors, depending on what sides would realistically be lightest and darkest according to the position of the sun. Then, in all of the layers that held some portion of the wall, I applied the Cracklequre filter. Then, by using a photo of an actual stained glass window I found online, (after I had gotten rid of the color so only the outline of the shapes remained), I used the Circular Marquee tool, filling it in with different colors, and the Brush tool, to first create the stained glass structure highest in the picture. After I was content with the coloring, I applied a Stained Glass filter and Stroke. Then, by transforming that structure, adding 3 more layers, positioning the structures in a 2x2 grid shape, and inverting the colors, I created the other stain glass structures. Finally for the religious stained galss scene, I got a picture from the internet of a painting of Christ's crucifixion and applied the Stain Glass Filter to it.
